Looking Down on Me

There is something about the way people manipulate others to make them feel lower than they are. I have to say that I actually thought about leaving my job that I go to three days a week, here’s why:

I have been coming in early, around 9, to work because my dad is unavailable to help me and my sister works close to where I do. I got to work early and saw something that needed to be done but didn’t want to start if it meant that someone else was assigned or there were extremely special instructions. I texted my manager and got no response so I decided to tidy up the place since I didn’t want to start without permission. You see, I work with industrial/commercial sewing machines so some pretty serious injuries can occur even if I do everything right.

One of my co-workers who is an experienced stitcher comes in and I ask her about the work that I had walked into. I was told to go ahead and start it. I had just made a casing and was about to start ruffling the item when my manager comes in and stops me. She gave me attitude for starting something that I had gotten permission about from my co-worker. I was told that I couldn’t come in early anymore and had to come in around 10:30-11:00 unless I really had to come in early. I was offended since I actually hadn’t done anything wrong but let it slide. I knew that if I argued it would lead nowhere. I mean, I didn’t do anything on the machines until someone was there and she had just walked in a little bit after my co-worker did. I guess she thought I was on the machines already but I was not.

I didn’t like the tone she used with me because it made me feel like I was doing something wrong and was an idiot for attempting otherwise. She even brought up that “we” had agreed on 11:00 even though two weeks after the start of my internship she let me come in at 10:00.

I kind of feel like it has blown over because she has praised me for my efficiency and ability to do things quickly lately. I don’t know if she feels bad but I don’t think she does, which is fine, because she says what she wants. I just hope that something like this doesn’t happen again. However, in her defense she may have been just venting since we are in a time pressure season with holiday costumes and all of that…
