My New York Life #3: Thanksgiving Adventures

I hope that everyone had a great Thanksgiving holiday! I will say that mine had me missing my family but I had an event filled break. I thought it would be fun to break it down a little. Also, let me know how your Thanksgiving was down below!

Wednesday 11/21: Prep Before the Storm
I knew that I would need all the energy that I could muster. I had intended to wake up early so that I could sleep early but that didn’t work. I woke up pretty late and then just relaxed at my apartment and enjoyed the confines of my room. I ended up going to bed around 8:30-9 because…

Thursday 11/22: Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade
I woke up around 1:30AM to work the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade! I got ready slowly and took my time. My roommate made me a breakfast sandwich which I heated and took with me when I got on the subway at 3:00AM. I also want to point out that there were still people at 3:00AM in the subway from workers, homeless, and other commuters. I was a little surprised and honestly thought that I would be unsafe but it wasn’t that bad at all. I sat on the subway for quite a bit before it moved which I wasn’t surprised by. I got to Herald Square around 4:00AM and relaxed before heading up around 4:30AM. I got up to the third floor and got ready for the onslaught! Just kidding. The stilt walkers arrived in slow waves. I was definitely in the slower entering group of people. The parade itself was something I didn’t get to see but I enjoyed working the parade!

I FaceTimed my family and we all took photos as I was walking to 42nd. I definitely missed my family. I got home around 1:30PM. I saw two of my roommates and felt too exhausted to actually going out with one of them to a friendsgiving. I decided to do laundry and watch television. I did fall asleep for 15 minutes because I was just that tired.

Friday & the Weekend: I definitely wanted to do some Black Friday shopping because it has always been a tradition within my family to go out and enjoy the good deals. Shout out to all the troopers who worked their butts off during that whole weekend! I ended up going out in the afternoon to SoHo and grabbing a couple of hot ticket items in Uniqlo, H&M, and Sephora. I spent the rest of my weekend relaxing for the most part. I really needed it since this week has been full of meetings and getting other things in order. I did enjoy what felt like a really long weekend. I need another one please!

An Article to Inspire You

You know, there is so much negativity in this world whether it come from your personal life or on social media. I try my best to look at social media with a positive light because I can control what I see and don’t see. I love that. I love that I am in control of something that can bring me joy. Sure, there are friends who go through tough times and it is always a great thing when I can be of company to them during that. Counterbalancing the sadness in others lives, I choose to have happy things to stabilize my life. I follow Buzzfeed on Facebook and some of you might find Buzzfeed to be something silly but they can have some pretty inspiring articles like this one: 15 Stories From People Who Found Their Unexpected Dream Jobs. I would love to just stumble upon my dream job, something in the design realm or fashion, but alas I have yet to come to that. I also wish for The Mermaid Network to grow into a place where who knows what could happen?

I won’t give up and I want all of you Fleeters to at least read one because it can inspire you to remember your dream and work hard for it, even if it isn’t easy. I promise that you won’t regret reading even a part of this article because it is awesome.

Which dream job did you find most interesting?

Please Meet, Felicity Smoak

If you don’t to read the journey of how I got Felicity, you are more than welcome to just scroll down to the bold print!

I am a pretty happy camper right now because I have a new laptop. Miss Fanny, my previous laptop, died because the screen wasn’t working and I had already changed the screen and keyboard (it hadn’t been working either). I lost Miss Fanny in August 2014 and so I was laptop-less for a while. I had been on the hunt for the “perfect” replacement and none of them were cutting it. No one was making disc drives for cds/dvds and most were over my budget. I wanted to stay under $400 since Miss Fanny had almost cost $500 and only lasted three years. By the way, in case you are curious, I owned a HP Pavilion G4 in red.

My requirements going on a laptop hunt:

1. Red, it had be red like Miss Fanny.
2. CD Drive
3. Less than $400.00
4. 14″ (I prefer that screen size)

I didn’t want another HP product since I was displeased with what happened to Miss Fanny. However, I had seen Chromebooks and fell in love with the color options that HP provided. I love computers with some style because they are what get me. I also love the price of these, $299.00 for the 14″! I couldn’t find anything that was coming close to my requirements but the Chromebook checked out on two of these. I decided that the HP Chromebook 14″ would be mine but held back.

The memory on the Chromebook is only 16 GB built in. After much consideration, I decided it wasn’t a big deal but I still held back even when my heart was set on the ocean turquoise color. Around November 2014, HP released their newest line of Chromebooks, the HP Chromebook 14 Nvidia Tegra K1. I fell in love with the mix of the snow white/ocean turquoise exterior and the fact that this Chromebook was fanless. “Nvidia” stands for the processor inside which is fanless, much like your cellphone and tablet which have no fan. I also found out that this one had a micro SD slot, a minor set back I can live with.

I won’t go into much more detail since I haven’t had Felicity for long, but she is a wonderful laptop so far! I will also say that it sucks that there are no silicone keyboard covers for this laptop! If you know of any, please let me know! Also, if you would like to look at this computer, click here.

Felicity Smoak

No, that is no misspelling, that is how you spell Felicity’s last name from the CW show, Arrow. I actually had been thinking about the name the day after New Year’s Day since I had just ordered her. I wanted something witty or cute. I knew that Flounder would have been cute but Flounder isn’t turquoise. All the other names I had come up with just didn’t fit. My sister was in the car with me and she told me to name my computer someone smart, she has a Macbook named Hermione, and the first person to come to my head was Felicity. I love Arrow, it is the one show that I literally look for every week. [Who is ready for the winter premiere on January 19th?] So, yes, her name is Felicity and she is awesome thus far!

What kind of computer do you have? Plus, I hope that you are having a good day/afternoon/evening!

Hard Work is Paying Off

The show that I recently designed has been getting great reviews on the acting, performance, set, design, lighting, everything! It is crazy the feedback we are getting from people in the department and elsewhere. So many people have commented on it and we have had sold out shows so far!! For some reason the play I worked on has gotten a lot of talk and has been turning out to be a great accomplishment.

The undergraduate chair of the theatre department calls me “Ms. X” (“X” is just the cover up for my last name) and I turn to look at her and she congratulates me. I am glad that I have gotten the opportunity to work as a student designer and to be praised by the person who is probably the first faculty member I met…it was crazy awesome.

Good ju-ju to all of you and know that you can do it! I mean, look at how much I flipped out and now here I am.

Natural Proclivity

Okay, I will be absolutely honest and tell you that I am a person who can get really frantic and stress out immensely over a lot of things. However, M-Prof makes me calmer and by that, I mean that, he can tell me something straight out without making me feel dumb or just letting me decide how to handle it on my own. I know that I said in my previous post that he really lets me handle all the things that I need to as a designer but that doesn’t mean that I need to fend for myself because he is there to help.

M-Prof in class was showing us items in class and I folded them and placed them neatly on the pile forming. Someone commented “Gosh, Tiffany, you are just folding the fabric all nice.” and I just kept folding because it is something that I tend to do. I hate to be disorderly or have something out of place. M-Prof said in response to that “She just has a natural proclivity and that is a reason why I love to have her as my assistant on shows.” Right. In. Front. Of. Everyone.

Alright, am I making a huge deal of this? Probably, but there is a really nice feeling when someone who you look up to and respect so much tells you that they appreciate you.

Definition: Proclivity- a tendency to choose or do something regularly; an inclination or predisposition toward a particular thing.

“a proclivity for hard work”

Why, Thank You!

Alright, so this is another thing that goes along with my other post, Praises but this time it is a more hesitant tale of the success I got by taking a chance…

Today I had to present my research that I did for the show I am working on in class, Hedda Gabler by Ibsen. We had to set the show in the Victorian or Edwardian era. I chose to do Victorian since the show I assistant designed last semester was in the Edwardian era. I chose to keep the look sleek and I had been doing all the characters which is a lot of work. I got confirmation from a friend about the fact that we had to just focus on what we were assigned. So, all I had to was Hedda Tesman.

I did the research and unsure of accuracy even though I was using a legitimate site because it was extremely stressful and I wasn’t familiar because I hadn’t covered it in my costume history class.

Surprise, though, I got glowing reviews and with the explanations I used it worked out well. So, moral? Go for it and learn from your mistakes because you never know when you are absolutely right or wrong unless you take that risk.

In case you are wondering, I choose things that are appealing to me and really interact with the character because it is a representation of them as they progress throughout the play.
